Using a Website to Test a Product Proposition

IntelAnvil built the ThoughtTapestry website and tested it with potential customers to determine whether people understood the product and how interested they were in it.

From Research to a Real Product Website

  • Earlier product research helped determine what potential users wanted ThoughtTapestry to do and which capabilities should be prioritized.
  • Market research then tested interest in the resulting product concept and whether potential customers would consider paying for it.
  • The next step was to build the ThoughtTapestry website and test how people responded when the website itself had to explain the product and its value.

The Research Question

Does the ThoughtTapestry website communicate the product clearly and generate interest among potential customers?

IntelAnvil investigated this through a website evaluation with nine participants conducted using Judge My Website. The research examined both their interest in what the website was promoting and how they understood the product after exploring it.

1. Test Whether the Proposition Generates Interest

Building the website made it possible to test how people responded to ThoughtTapestry as an actual product proposition.

Participants explored the website and were then asked how interested they were in what it was promoting.

Nine participants evaluated their interest on a seven-point scale.

Product Interest

How interested are you in the products, services, or offerings this website is promoting?

What the Result Shows

The published evaluation reported an average normalized interest score of 76%, indicating a generally positive response to the product presented by the website.

This provided evidence that ThoughtTapestry could generate interest when potential customers encountered the product through its website.

Interest alone, however, does not show that the website is communicating the product successfully. People also need to understand what is actually being offered.

2. Test Whether People Understand the Proposition

Rather than simply asking participants whether the website was clear, IntelAnvil tested comprehension by asking them to explain the product themselves.

After exploring the website, participants answered an open-ended question in their own words.

In Participants' Own Words

ThoughtTapestry is an AI-powered connected thinking platform designed to help users capture thoughts naturally and automatically discover relationships, patterns, and overarching ideas across their notes.
ThoughtTapestry helps you connect your thoughts over time to reveal patterns, themes, and relationships you might otherwise miss.
The website lets you capture thoughts naturally while AI discovers the relationships, patterns, and the picture emerging across everything you collect.
It's a system to help organize your thoughts and see the patterns in them that you may not be able to on your own.

What the Responses Show

Participants repeatedly identified the central elements of the ThoughtTapestry proposition: capturing thoughts, using AI, connecting information over time, and discovering patterns or larger ideas.

Importantly, these were not descriptions supplied by IntelAnvil for participants to agree or disagree with. Participants reconstructed the product proposition themselves after exploring the website.

The responses therefore provided direct evidence about whether the website was communicating the intended product concept.

What the Research Tells Us

The website served two purposes at once: it presented ThoughtTapestry to potential customers and created something concrete that could be tested.

The interest results provided evidence about whether the product attracted potential customers. The open-ended comprehension test provided separate evidence about whether they understood what the product actually was.

Together, the research provided evidence for deciding:

  • whether the product proposition generated interest
  • whether potential customers understood the central product concept
  • whether the website communicated the intended value proposition
  • whether the results supported further testing and development

The research did not establish market demand by itself. It showed that potential customers could understand the product through its website, that the proposition generated interest, and that the website could be used to gather further evidence about the opportunity.

From an Idea to Something People Can Respond To

Some questions are difficult to answer while a product remains only an idea, description, or internal proposal.

IntelAnvil can turn an early proposition into a real website or other lightweight artifact, put it in front of relevant people, and use their responses to learn whether the product is understood and whether it generates interest.

The result is not just a website. It is a practical experiment that replaces some of the assumptions around a product or market opportunity with evidence from real responses.

Three Stages of ThoughtTapestry Research

The website evaluation was the third stage in a progression of research around the same product opportunity. Each stage answered a different question and provided the basis for the next.
